Erica Rakow joined the News 6 team in April 2014.
Florida's heat, humidity and hurricanes is nothing new to Erica. In fact, she doesn't know anything different because she's a Florida native through and through. Erica was born in Miami Beach, grew up in Weston and graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Science in Telecommunication.
Two weeks after graduation, Erica moved to Florida's Panhandle where she reported weekdays and anchored and produced the weekend newscasts at the NBC affiliate in Panama City Beach, WJHG. Erica moved to the Gulf Coast just days after the massive BP oil spill. There, she covered several presidential visits and the 2011 school board meeting shooting. She also brought the dangers of the synthetic drug bath salts to the attention of local law enforcement and eventually covered Governor Rick Scott signing a bill making the drug illegal.
Erica's next stop in the sunshine state was “The River City” where she worked as a reporter and fill-in anchor for News 6's sister station, WJXT. While in Jacksonville, Erica spent a few days at sea aboard the USS New York, covering its historical homeport shift to Naval Station Mayport. She also traveled to Washington D.C. with the survivors of local law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, to cover National Police Week.
When she's not carrying a notepad and microphone, Erica enjoys volunteering with children and animals, exploring state parks and anything to do with the water, spending time with her family, boyfriend Scott and dog Skylar, running, taking pictures, traveling, discovering new parts of towns and restaurants and going to sporting events and concerts. If you ever see Erica out and about or driving around, her big dog Skylar, who is definitely part human, will likely be with her, hanging out of her car window.
Erica believes journalism is a window on the world. A window that helps keep people honest, informed and inspired. She enjoys bringing light to important issues that matter to you and your family and welcomes any information or feedback you have.
