ORLANDO, Fla. – General Electric announced on Thursday the recall of more than a million dishwashers due to fire hazards.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission said the dishwashers' heating elements can fail and cause fires. GE has received 15 reports of heating element failures, including seven reports of fires, three of which caused extensive property damage. No injuries have been reported.

According to the CPSC, the recall includes approximately 1.3 million GE, GE Adora, GE Eterna, GE Profile and Hotpoint dishwashers. The dishwashers were sold between March 2006 and August 2009 for $350 to $850. They came in black, white, bisque, stainless steel and CleanSteel colors and finishes.
Both the government and GE are urging consumers to stop using the dishwashers affected.
"Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled dishwashers, disconnect the electric supply by shutting off the fuse or circuit breaker controlling it," GE said in a statement on its website. "GE will provide a free repair to all consumers with units affected by the recall."
The company also said it would offer rebates toward the purchase of a new dishwasher. To see the full list of model numbers included in the recall click here.
The model and serial numbers can be found on a metallic plate located on the left tub wall visible when the door is opened.
"The model and serial numbers are important, as not all dishwashers are included in the recall," GE said on its website.
The company asked that consumers do not return the appliances to the stores where they were purchased.
