Boise State (1-1) Vs. North Dakota (0-2)
GAME NOTES: In the final day of the Grizzly Basketball Classic, the Boise State Broncos will collide with the North Dakota Fighting Sioux at Dahlberg Arena.
After opening the season with a thrilling, 90-87 victory over Loyola Marymount, the Broncos were unable to keep pace with Montana on Saturday, as the Grizzlies defeated Boise State, 95-82. The Broncos will remain on the road after this contest and will not host their first matchup until November 28th when North Texas comes to town.
As for the Fighting Sioux, they fell to 0-2 on the year with an 83-60 setback to Loyola Marymount on Saturday. North Dakota opened its season with an embarrassing, 61-37 setback to Montana. The Fighting Sioux put forth a solid effort last year and closed out the season with a respectable 16-12 ledger.
This will be the second-ever matchup between the two schools on the hardwood. The only other meeting was won by Boise State.
It is still early in the year, but the Broncos have endured struggles defensively. After allowing 87 points to Loyola Marymount in a win on Friday, the Broncos were unable to contain the Grizzlies on Saturday, as Boise State was punished for 95 points. On the bright side the team does look more than capable of scoring points in bunches, and even though the team was defeated by the Grizzlies, Boise Sate shot a respectable 46.0 percent from the floor and made 22-of-27 attempts from the foul line. Ike Okoye led the way with 20 points and nine rebounds in the loss, while La'Shard Anderson posted 16 points, to go along with five assists. It was the second straight game that Anderson dished out five assists. The guard has been sensational thus far, scoring double figures in both of the team's matchups. Kurt Cunningham, who scored 16 points in the opener, added 13 points against Montana.
Offense has been tough to come by for North Dakota in the early stages of this season, as the team scored just 60 points in its loss to Loyola Marymount, after posting a meager 37 points against Montana in its opener. Patrick Mitchell, who scored a team-high 15 points in the team's opener, led the way again for North Dakota, as the forward netted 16 points against Loyola Marymount. Spencer Goodman added 11 points off the bench for the Fighting Sioux, but the rest of the team was held under double-figures. Travis Mertens tallied seven points and grabbed five rebounds, but also committed a game-high five turnovers.
The Broncos need to figure out what to do on the defensive end of the court, but do not expect Boise State to have any trouble with North Dakota. The Broncos have too much firepower and should roll over the Fighting Sioux.
