ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Orange County school district phoned its students' parents with a recorded message on Thursday, warning them about an increase in prescription drug abuse.
The district said it has seen a 90 percent increase in students abusing prescription drugs.
The phone message asked parents to keep track of prescription drugs in their homes. It also warned parents to observe the behavior of their children.
School officials said more students are taking pills to school to either consume, trade or sell.
"We are talking (about) drugs that are OK to take if the doctor knows you're taking it or if the parents picked it up, and the parents just didn't know that 'Junior' was taking it," Orange County Superintendent Ron Blocker said.
Blocker said most parents are not aware that children are seeking the drugs. He said it's alarming to see this trend in middle and high schools.
Any student found with prescription drugs at school will be expelled, officials said.
