PORT ORANGE, Fla. -- A Volusia County middle school teacher was issued a one-day unpaid suspension, accused of having a student use a bungee cord as a leash to lead another student around the classroom like a dog.
Teresa Volkman, 55, a geography teacher at Silver Sands Middle School in Port Orange, was punished for the incident, which occurred in November. The student led around on the leash had apparently been kicking other students as they waited in line for papers to be graded.
On a professional standards report, Volkman wrote, "I guess I have been watching too much 'Dog Whisperer' on TV."
School board officials said Volkman was trying to use humor to discipline the boy. They said she had no prior incidents on her record.
"She recognizes she made a mistake and she is very remorseful for it, and we'll make sure that that does not happen again," school board spokeswoman Nancy Wait said.
The boy and his parents did not find humor in the punishment, however. The boy's mother reported the incident, which occurred in November, to police when she saw red marks on her son's neck.
Students and parents said they are shocked by the punishment.
"I think she should get fired," one student said.
Volkman has taught in Volusia County for 21 years.
