DELTONA, Fla. -- A Deltona Middle School teacher accused of barricading students in their hotel rooms during a field trip has been suspended.
Sherman Hanssen, 62, was suspended five days after parents said he failed to supervise the students during a Future Farmers of America convention in Orlando in June.
Parents said Hanssen used chairs to lock the girls in their rooms. The students then called their parents to report the incident. Hanssen said he did it for their safety.
Hanssen is also accused of taking $300 from their parents for the cost of the hotel rooms, which were paid for by the school.
Hanssen has taught in Volusia County for 12 years.
