Study: Cockroaches, Bugs Triggering School Allergies

POSTED: Monday, October 10, 2005
UPDATED: 11:25 am EDT October 10, 2005

University of Florida researchers said insects and cockroaches inside schools are one of the leading causes of allergies for students.

However, the scientists also found the pesticides used to manage the pests can be just as bad for students as those allergies.

Since the study, a new integrated pest management program has been introducted in Brevard County, Local 6 News has reported.

Officials have taught school custodial staff members how to reduce the risk of pests and the dangers of pesticide.

After six months, Brevard schools are seeing a 50 percent reduction in bugs and using half of the pesticides, according to the report.
