'Hunger Games' joins classics on challenged books list

The American Library Association has released its frequently challenged books list as part of its annual Banned Books Week--and it could contain one of your favorite new books.

According to the ALA, among the top books challenged in 2011 is movie-sensation "The Hunger Games," by Suzanne Collins, citing that the book received complaints of anti-ethnic; anti-family; insensitivity; offensive language; occult/satanic and violence.

Also challenged is the "Gossip Girl" series, by Cecily Von Ziegesar for drugs; offensive language and sexually explicit and classics like "To Kill a Mockingbird."

Banned Books Week, held Sept. 30 through October 6, is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and it highlights the value of free and open access to information, according to the ALA website.

The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted with removal or restrictions in libraries and schools.
