Orange County to discuss school start times

Proposal would move first bell to later in morning

ORLANDO, Fla. – Parents and students on Thursday will have another chance to weigh in on plans to chance the start time for high schools in Orange County.

Classes currently begin between 7:10 and 7:30 a.m., but the district has been considering several options, including one that would move the first bell to no earlier than 8 a.m.

Supporters said the later start time would give students more time to sleep and improve their performance in class, but the plans come with a cost because bus routes would need to be changed.

The school board is set to have a work session on the debate at 4:30 p.m. at the school administration building in downtown Orlando.
