Brevard places 2 schools in state's top 10

ORLANDO, Fla. – Two Central Florida high schools are ranked in the top 10 in the state, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Edgewood Jr/Sr High School on Merritt Island came in at No. 4 on the list, good for 30th overall in the country.  Westshore Jr/Sr High School in Melbourne checked in at No. 8 in the state and 54th in the nation.

Meanwhile, Orange County Public Schools placed seven schools on the state list, which was released Friday.

Winter Park (No. 44 in Florida), Timber Creek (No. 45), Freedom (No. 62), Lake Nona (No. 67) and Olympia (No. 70) high schools ranked in the top 5 percent of all eligible high schools, while University High School (No. 103) placed among the top 10 percent.

Orange County Virtual School also received recognition for its placement in the top third in the country, the district said.

Schools are awarded gold, silver or bronze medals based on their performance on state assessments, their graduation rates and how well they prepare students for college.
