Professor Wrestling: 'WrestleMania 24' Results

Flair, Michaels Give Fans Orlando Magic

Listen up!

Class is in session.

"WrestleMania 24" is history. It seemed like just yesterday that I was telling the world how "WrestleMania 23" went down -- and now we're looking ahead to "WrestleMania 25" next year in Houston. Time sure does zip by. At any rate, let me just say that on paper this one looked a bit weak, but WWE pulled off another satisfying big event. The highlight in Orlando? Without a doubt, Ric Flair taking on Shawn Michaels.

How did it turn out? The answer in a bit. But first, let's see how I fared in my pre-show predictions:

BunnyMania Lumberjack Match: Ashley and Maria vs. Beth Phoenix and Melina
What Should Happen: Actually, if you wanted a true Playboy playmate match, the other team should consist of Torrie Wilson and Kimberly (Diamond Dallas Page's wife). Not that I keep track of that stuff. Really. Other things that should happen: Interference from Snoop Dogg, Santino Morela and Jerry Lawler. This is and should be the glam sham that it is.

What Will Happen: Bunny of the moment Maria will get the pin, likely over Melina.

What Did Happen: Glamazon Beth Phoenix pinned Maria.

Belfast Brawl Match: JBL vs. Finlay
What Should Happen: This is a no disqualification match, so I'm guessing it'll be a bit of a bloodbath. That's OK, though. I trust these two to be entertaining. If they work hard, this could be really good. If they go through the motions, it could be ugly really quick.

What Will Happen: Hornswoggle should be a factor -- and we might even see Vince McMahon stick his nose in this one. In the end, I'm going with Finlay to win.

What Did Happen: No sign of Vince. JBL got the clean victory.

24-Man Battle Royal, Winner Faces ECW Champion
What Should Happen: Do I really have to list who is going to be in this one? OK, here goes: Big Daddy V, Brian Kendrick, Chuck Palumbo, Cody Rhodes, Deuce, Domino, Elijah Burke, Festus, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan, Hardcore Holly, Jamie Noble, Jesse, Jimmy Wang Yang, Kane, Kofi Kingston, Lance Cade, Mark Henry, Matt Striker, Shannon Moore, The Great Khali, The Miz, Tommy Dreamer, Trevor Murdoch and Val Venis. All I care about is that The Great Khali should be eliminated as soon as possible! He sucks! Big time!

  SURVEY
Which match are you most looking forward to at "WrestleMania XXIV"?

What Will Happen: Kane will prevail, and then lose to ECW champion Chavo Guererro.

What Did Happen: Kane not only won the battle royal, but pinned Chavo in to time to win the ECW belt.

Money In The Bank Ladder Match: C.M. Punk vs. Chris Jericho vs. MVP vs. Mr. Kennedy vs. Carlito vs. Shelton Benjamin vs. John Morrison
What Should Happen: Shelton Benjamin should really, really get a chance to see if he can hang with the big boys at the top. But his microphone skills have always held him back. That's too bad. My next pick? The ever-improving MVP.

What Will Happen: I like MVP to take this match. I was leaning Benjamin for a long time, but I'm betting on the U.S. champ.

What Did Happen: Great match. Great action. C.M. Punk was the victor.

Challenge Match: Batista vs. Umaga
What Should Happen: Two brainless bruisers lock up for no apparent reason other than to defend the honor of Raw (Umaga) or Smackdown! (Batista). I wish more was at stake here, because this could be good. Umaga probably needs to win to return to absolute monster heel status, which is more valuable than his current mid-carder status.

What Will Happen: Umaga will get the pin over Batista.

What Did Happen: Batista was the better man, getting the pin.

Career Threatening Match: Ric Flair vs. Shawn Michaels
What Should Happen: Flair should win, then get a title shot against the WWE Champion in the next pay-per-view. He should win that match, then retire as champion the next night on Raw! I've written that a million times and it never, ever seems like a bad idea.

What Will Happen: I'm going to go against the grain and say Flair will make Michaels tap out with the figure-four leg-lock. Will HBK turn heel afterwards?

What Did Happen: HBK pinned Flair cleanly after a double-dose of Sweet Chin Music. Worth the price of the pay-per-view. Fantastic, emotional match you'll never, ever see again.

Challenge Match: Big Show vs. Floyd Mayweather
What Should Happen: Mayweather should be smart enough to allow Show to get in some offense. Show should allow Mayweather to punch him silly. But in the end, Show has to win. This is WrestleMania, not BoxMania.

What Will Happen: The writers will find a reasonable way for Big Show to win this match.

What Did Happen: Mayweather used brass knuckles to take down Show for the 10-count.

World Heavyweight Championship Match: Edge (c) vs. Undertaker
What Should Happen: Vickie Guerrero should stay out of it. That's all I want.

What Will Happen: Edge's title reign ends right here. Undertaker takes the match and the belt. He'll still be undefeated at "WrestleMania," and wearing gold once again. Who will take it away? How about MVP?

What Did Happen: Undertaker's streak is alive at 16-0. He's your new World Heavyweight Champion.

WWE Championship Match: Randy Orton (c) vs. Triple H vs. John Cena
What Should Happen: This might be the show-stopper, especially if allowed to go at least 30 minutes. Orton needs the belt more than Triple H or Cena, so he should retain.

What Will Happen: Cena will block Triple H from getting back on his throne. I'm picking Orton to keep his belt.

What Did Happen: Orton survives an entertaining encounter. He's still the WWE champ.

That's it. A fine show, with very few warts. The crowd loved Flair/Michaels, but hated BunnyMania -- which is probably the way it should be. As for my picks, they were less than stellar kids, I have to admit. But on the other hand, notice how I nailed the championship matches? The ones that really matter? Perfection.

Next week: "WrestleMania 24" thoughts, and the winner of the contest where you tried to pick the winners. I was swamped with entries, and I'm guessing very few aced this particular test. Check out the column Friday morning to see who will pick up a 10-DVD set containing all the Royal Rumble matches from the past decade.

Still looking for more? No problem. Then download the 70th episode of "Old School, New School" RIGHT HERE. This week, Dr. Mike Lano, George Schire and yours truly talk WrestleMania, TNA and Mount Rushmore (what?). I wouldn't even think about missing it.

That's it.

Class is dismissed!
