ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Chinese government has granted approval to the Walt Disney World Co. to move forward with its second resort in the country.
Shanghai Disneyland has been in the planning stages for years, but Disney CEO Bog Iger announced on Tuesday that the company and the city have received approval to develop the $3.6 billion, 1,700-acre project.
The new complex will start with a Magic Kingdom-style park, shops and hotels.
Insiders say a formal signing ceremony is expected to happen when President Barack Obama visits China starting on Nov. 15.
Hong Kong Disneyland has been around since 2005. An expansion project was recently announced, and Disney hopes to boost attendance at the park.
