'Idol' Finalists Releasing Singles In June
Studdard's 'Wings' Due First
Show creator Simon Fuller says debut singles from both will be out soon. Studdard's single, "Flying Without Wings," will be out June 3. Aiken's single, "Bridge Over Troubled Water," will be released a few days later.
Studdard will begin work on his first album this weekend, according to The Associated Press. RCA Records chairman Clive Davis said he wants to take a long-term approach to Studdard's career.
The music mogul said Studdard "could very well be a major recording artist for many years to come."
Studdard plans to write some of the songs, and said the sound will be a mix between R&B and neo-soul, with a touch of gospel.
Aiken will be also be releasing an album, which, like Studdard's, is expected to be out later this year.
Studdard bested Aiken by 130,000 of the 24 million votes cast in the finals, according to network Fox. Initial reports of the vote tally by show host Ryan suggested the vote was much closer.
He first said on the show the other night that 13,000 votes separated the two, then just more than 1,300. But a network spokesman clarified the final tally Thursday.
"It's simply a case of someone misspeaking on live television," Scott Grogin said.
One number that was right on the mark was the amount of viewers that tuned into the show. According to numbers from Nielsen Media Research, 33.7 million viewers tuned into the "Idol" finale Wednesday, which topped the 33.1 million who watched this year's Oscar telecast.
The number of viewers spiked up to nearly 40 million people in the last half-hour of the show, according to Nielsen.
The total makes the "Idol" finale the third highest-rated reality show of all time, behind the first "Survivor" finale and the "Joe Millionaire" finale earlier this year.
Fans who can't get enough of "American Idol" will soon be able to see the singers in person, according to Fuller.
Studdard and Aiken will be joined by "Idol" finalists Kimberly Caldwell, Kimberly Locke, Trenyce, Julia Demato, Carmen Rasmusen, Joshua Gracin, Charles Grigsby and Rickey Smith for a concert tour this summer, which kicks off July 8 in St. Paul, Minn.
