BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- "American Idol" winner Ruben Studdard is reportedly ill.
A spokeswoman for Alabama State University said she's been told the "American Idol" winner has pneumonia -- and is hospitalized in Birmingham.
The spokeswoman told a Birmingham television station she got word of Studdard's illness from the singer's promoter. Studdard's condition isn't immediately available.
The illness means Studdard, who is from Birmingham, won't perform a concert on the school's campus set for Wednesday night.
The concert was one of several events leading to the Thanksgiving Day football game between Alabama State and Tuskegee.
Studdard, 26, won the title of "American Idol" in May 2003, beating out Clay Aiken. His first album, "Soulful," debuted at No. 1 that December.
His latest album, "I Need an Angel," is new in stores Tuesday. The album signals the singer's return to his gospel music roots.
"I've only been singing non-spiritual material for about three or four years now, (and) gospel music was all I sang before that, so doing an inspirational record was a natural thing for me," Studdard said in a message on his official Web site.
