Talk about a cringe-worthy moment.

Actor Martin Short appeared on the fourth hour of the '"Today" show on Wednesday to promote his new movie "Madagascar 3" when things got awkward with host Kathie Lee Gifford.

Gifford asked the former "Saturday Night Live" actor about his marriage to actress Nancy Dolman, apparently unaware that Short's wife died in 2010.

Gifford complimented Short on the longevity of his marriage to Nancy and asked what their secret was.

The actor continued to answer Gifford's questions, waiting until a commercial break to inform her of his wife's passing.

After the break, Gifford told viewers that Short mentioned his wife died of ovarian cancer two years ago.

Later, Gifford posted an apology on Twitter, “I send my sincerest apologies to @MartinShort and his family. He handled situation w/enormous grace and kindness and I’m so grateful.”

Even though, @MartinShort is not the actor’s Twitter handle.

Gifford had a similar mix-up while co-hosting "Live! With Regis and Kathie Lee" in 1997, when she asked musician James Taylor about his brother Andrew who had died four years earlier.
