My parents had taken me to see Michael Franti and Spearhead before in Monterey, CA. That was 6 years ago. I was 3 years old and slept through the entire show. My mom said I must have had some pretty amazing dreams.
I was excited to find out I was going to see Michael Franti and Spearhead with my family at the House Of Blues at Downtown Disney. I hoped to stay awake this time. “Say Hey” is one of my favorite songs and I wanted to hear it performed live.
When we got to the show and walked in HOB, I noticed that there were A LOT of people inside. They were happy and excited. It was like they were waiting for something really amazing to happen. Everyone was so friendly, I felt welcomed and very comfortable.
The unique atmosphere and decor inside The HOB was amazing. We were surrounded by fancy art, warm purple and red lanterns and it seemed that everything was okay to paint on, even the ceiling. It was beautiful and creative. It reminded me of being at a museum and a church at the same time.
We went upstairs to the balcony as the show started. Serena Ryder came on stage and suddenly I felt very calm. Her voice could go both high and low so smoothly. She seemed to play guitar and sing from her soul. I felt happy and couldn’t help but to sway back and forth and clap to the rhythm.
It was so mellow and calming, I fell asleep. This seems to be a pattern of mine.
A loud cheering and strong sound woke me up. Michael Franti and Spearhead had come onstage! The energy level in the theater skyrocketed. I suddenly felt like I was a part of something wonderful and I loved that feeling.
The music gave me a new emotion that I don’t even know how to explain. If the whole world could feel it at the same time, we would all be together, happy and loving. If that wasn’t enough to make me want to dance like the tree in my front yard in a wind storm, Franti’s contagious bouncing happily around did. He was even barefoot. My mom told me he has not worn shoes in 13 years. If you want to hear Michael explain why, click on this link.
Everyone was having such a great time. Franti made sure of that! He even came up to the loge, hugged, held hands, and danced with just about everyone. He was there singing “Closer to You” next to me. Everything was right at that moment. Perfect.
My mom and I went downstairs to be close to the stage for the rest of the show. It was sooo crowded, but everyone went out of their way to make me feel comfortable. A nice man named Ishaan even let me sit on his shoulders so that I could see.
Suddenly, a man dressed in black invited me backstage. There were other kids there too. Even my 8-year-old brother, Ethan showed up. I didn’t realize what was going on until I saw the band so close. I was about to face my biggest fear. Being on stage in front of people! As we were invited onto the stage, I felt so nervous. I thought I would do something so embarrassing that the two thousand people staring at me would laugh at me. That feeling disappeared quickly as I heard my favorite song begin with Michael and the band smiling with me. I looked into the audience and realized no one was going to judge me. I was free to sing and dance be myself with no fear.
When the song ended, Mr. Franti gave me a hug and told me that he liked my shirt.
I had such a great time and learned new things at the Michael Franti and Spearhead concert with my family.I loved the music very much, but also found out it isn’t all about the music. It’s about people enjoying life and each other. I can’t wait until the next musical adventure we go on.
