Contest Opens For Cheetah Cub Names

POSTED: Thursday, February 17, 2005

Two of the new cheetah cubs at the National Zoo need names, and zookeepers are turning to the public to make the choice, television station WRC reported.

The four cubs -- two males and two females -- were born on Nov. 23. They went on public display on Feb. 5.

Names for two of the cubs -- one male and one female -- will be chosen through an online poll. Names for the other two cubs have not yet been announced.

Zookeepers have already narrowed the list of names to three each. The possible names for the male cub are:
  • Uheri (Swahili for "good fortune")
  • Fahari ("pride")
  • Askari ("guard" or "watchman")

The potential names for the female cub are:
  • Imara (Swahili for "strong" or "strength")
  • Sanaa ("work of art" or "beauty")
  • Karas (a region of Namibia)

Once the contest is over, one voter will be chosen to take a behind-the-scenes tour of the cheetah exhibit. Voters who submit an e-mail address will be eligible for the contest.

The National Zoo has also set up a Webcam of the cheetah cubs. Click here to watch the Webcam.
