Teen Warns About Inhalant Abuse

A 17-year-old who used to inhale fumes to get high said, "I'm lucky I didn't die."The girl, identified as Lindsey at a Washington news conference, said she didn't even quit after a friend went into convulsions. Instead, she said, she just decided to never use with the friend again.She now says she's "so ashamed of" her past.The head of the National Institute on Drug Abuse said it's extremely hard to spot when someone is inhaling chemicals that often come from typical household goods.Dr. Nora Volkow said doctors can easily miss the signs.Voljow said almost one-in-10 teens have used inhalants to get high in the past year.She said use is increasing among eighth-graders.The group's Web site says most inhalants produce a rapid high that resembles alcohol intoxication. If sufficient amounts are inhaled, nearly all solvents and gases produce anesthesia, a loss of sensation, and even unconsciousness.
