Students at Lake Brantley High School get results against hate, vandalism

Jewish cultural club raises awarness with 'Never Again' concept

ORLANDO, Fla. – Local high school students wanted to send a message that "Hate won't win" after anti-Semitic images showed up on their campus.

Members of Club L'Chaim, a Jewish cultural club at Lake Brantley High School in Altamonte Springs that recently organized a program called "Never Again" in response to incidents at their school and in the community.

"There's been a lot of incidents around town, schools, people, There's a girl in Oviedo who got called out for wearing a shirt with a Jewish star. There were bomb threats to the community center in Maitland. The point was to prevent things from getting bigger," Ofree Basher, a 10th-grade club member, said.

Students said it was important to them to do more than paint over the swastikas that showed up on their campus. They wanted to create awareness in hopes of preventing future incidents.

The keynote speaker at a recent event was Gene Klein, a local Holocaust survivor, who spoke to a full auditorium after the club promoted the event at school, in the community and on social media.

"It was really amazing to see we aren't the only ones. We can educate, make change and stand up for what we feel is right," Alana Halperin, an 11th-grade club member, said.
