Getting Results: Woodworker close to completing 500 canes for veterans

News 6 checks in with Getting Results award winner

EUSTIS, Fla. – A Getting Results Award winner is close to reaching his goal to help 500 military veterans.

Woodworker Oscar De Vere Morris, of Eustis, makes custom canes for veterans across the U.S.

At the beginning of the year, he told News 6 he set a goal to make 500 canes.

Morris said he is about 20 canes away from achieving his goal; many of the canes were made from donated Christmas trees.

Morris turns the Christmas tree castoffs into life-changing works of art.

“You decorate them, you probably display them and unfortunately most of them are just pushed to the side, pushed to the curb,” Morris said. “Our veterans are just like Christmas trees.”

Each cane has a personal touch with an embedded penny from the veteran’s year of enlistment.

"Every single one of them has a story," Morris said in February when he was presented with the Getting Results Award.

Morris posts updates on his Facebook page, “Free Canes for Veterans,” where he shares photos of veterans with their custom canes.
