Man Taken To Hospital For Respiratory Problems
The unidentified 82-year-old University Center West nursing home resident was transported to Florida Hospital DeLand, where staff members discovered the ailments, DeLand police said.Deland investigators confirmed Thursday that maggots were found in the man's left eye and that they had never seen anything like it, Local 6's Tarik Minor reported.A representative from University Center West said the man had constant care from multiple hospice workers and two certified nursing aides at the nursing home, according to a DeLand police report."The allegations are severe and we are looking into them," an administrator said.Officials from the state Department of Children and Families are investigating the incident.The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has found 19 deficiencies at the facility since June 2006.Watch Local 6 News for more on this story.
