Researcher: Hormone Imbalance Causes Syndrome

UPDATED: 9:39 a.m. EDT August 5, 2002

Men can have hormone imbalance problems -- just like women who experience premenstrual syndrome.

A Scotland researcher calls it irritable male syndrome.

He found that IMS is caused by a decline in testosterone, and that it can happen at any time in any male as a result of poor diet, environmental factors and stress. A simple blood test can determine the testosterone level.

Symptoms of IMS include exhaustion, unexplained weight changes, frequent urination, gallbladder or stomach problems, hypoglycemia, snoring, incontinence, high cholesterol, bone loss, hair loss, impaired thyroid function, loss of muscle or stamina, skin problems, problems getting an erection and irritability.

Experts said medication, diet and exercise can help relieve IMS.
