ORLANDO, Fla. -- More than 100 students of an Orlando prep school called in sick on Tuesday after at least 22 students were diagnosed with the H1N1 virus, according to a letter sent to parents.
School officials at Lake Highland Preparatory School recently sent the letter, saying that 22 students -- mostly fifth- and sixth-graders -- have contracted the virus, which is also known as swine flu.
Officials said the letter was intended to inform -- not alarm -- parents.
The school said absences were down 16 percent on Wednesday compared to Tuesday.
School officials said they are closely monitoring the situation and will isolate any students who appear to be ill. There have been more than 140 hand sanitizer dispensers placed throughout the campus.
More than 2,200 students attend the school.
