Bible Inspires Florida Doctor's 'Jesus Diet'

Meal Plan Is Similar To Mediterranean Cooking

A Longwood, Fla., doctor is taking a different perspective in his guide to better eating and living -- his meal plans have a divine inspiration, according to Local 6 News.

Dr. Don Colbert wrote the self-help book "The Jesus Diet" and the "What Would Jesus Eat" cookbook after realizing that some of the fattest Americans are also dedicated Christians, according to a report.

Colbert reportedly believes patients may be willing to listen to what Jesus may have done even if they ignore their doctors about healthy eating.

"Have them eat according to the Bible, have them exercise temperance, according to what the Bible says then we can turn them around, help them prevent the disease and reverse the curse," Colbert said.

The diet is similar to Mediterranean cooking.

"We know that Jesus ate a lot of fruit, we know he ate a lot of fish, a lot of whole grains, we know that he liked vegetables he like olive oil," Colbert said. "This is pretty much the Mediterranean diet which has been called the healthiest diet in the world, but it's a modification of the Med. diet because it does certain things, it puts in certain things that the Med diet doesn't."

The diet leaves out foods like pork and shellfish, which contain fatty acid.

"Foods that are high in aracadonic acid increase inflammation in the body, pork increases inflammation in the body, so does shellfish," Colbert said. "Also shellfish is high in heavy metal called cadmium."

The Jesus diet may be healthy, but Colbert realizes most people won't take the menu as gospel.

"Moderation is the key," Colbert said. "You try to take someone's bacon or pork chop or ham away and they'll look at you with hatred in their eyes."

Also included on the diet is whole-grain bread and red wine.
