A Philadelphia woman who fought hard to lose considerably more than 100 pounds found the last 20 pounds almost impossible.
But Katie Broomall finally got the body she wanted, reported WCAU-TV in Philadelphia.
Broomall's 350 pounds was a burden for her body and her mind.
"I was just exhausted all the time from carrying all the weight around," Broomall said. "I work full-time. I have two kids. And then I work part-time as a bartender. And then I'd get home at night and my legs would just throb, ache in pain. I lost my dad at a young age because he was extremely obese. And I'm a single parent, so I just decided I needed to be around for my kids."
Broomall took time off from her two jobs and underwent gastric bypass surgery. She lost 140 pounds, but that didn't solve all her weight and health problems.
"There is a huge side effect I wasn't prepared for -- all of the extra amount of skin," Broomall said.
There was so much skin that Broomall had to literally tuck it into her pants.
Broomall consulted with Philadelphia plastic surgeon Dennis Monteiro about a total lower body lift.
"We're going to try to reshape not only the abdomen, but also all the way around the flank and to the back," Monteiro told Broomall. "So, essentially, you will have a scar that's like a belt that will go all the way around your trunk."
Broomall has suffered many difficult complications from her hanging skin.
"It can cause chaffing and irritation rubbing against other body parts," Monteiro said. "You can trap moisture between body folds and have chronic skin infections, boils and rashes. It can get to the point you have so much hanging skin it can interfere with walking."
Broomall's surgery took hours. Monteiro had to cut and remove skin and fat all the way around her middle section.
"She's got a foot or more of skin here," Monteiro said.
Once removed, the amount of skin from the abdomen alone was amazing to see.
A technician weighed it and found that it was 12 pounds of skin and fat -- and that was just in the front. Adding the skin from the back brought the total amount of skin removed to 20 pounds.
"(We) got rid of that huge overhanging apron of skin. It looks great," Monteiro said. "Everything's healing nicely. You have a good, even contour. The belly now blends nicely into the hip and thigh area."
Even before the scars faded, Broomall loved her new look and feel.
"It is the best thing I've ever done for myself and my family and my kids. The quality of my life is 100 percent better than what it was and for that I am truly thankful, because I never thought I'd be standing here, never thought in my wildest dreams I'd be standing here today in this body, and I'm so thrilled," Broomall said.
