Doctors are seeing more and more dieters suffering from hair loss, according to a Local 6 News report.
Dieter Annick Alexander began to notice some hair loss after she dropped 100 pounds.
"Every time I was taking a shower or brushing my hair I would pay close attention to if I would, you know, lose any hair," Alexander said.
Dermatologists said most dieters seeing gradual hair loss are having a hard time dealing with it.
"I see patients all day long, quite hysterical, who suddenly notice or gradually notice that too much hair is coming out," dermatologist Michael Reed said.
Dieters can lose up to 400 hairs a day if they are not careful, according to the report.
"It can cause half the hair to be lost on the head," Reed said. "It can even happen when people losing weight gradually."
Reed said hair is sensitive and needs nutrients like protein and iron.
"Hair also needs essential B vitamins," Reed said. "It also needs essential fatty acids, and it also needs adequate minerals in order to grow properly."
Reed said people must eat a balanced diet and exercise daily.
"(If not) hair will be shocked," Reed said. "It will go into resting phase, and it will come out prematurely."
American Dietetic Association nutritionist Elisa Zied said a healthy weight loss plan is the key to happy hair.
