DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Prominent defense attorney J. Cheney Mason was hospitalized Friday afternoon in Daytona Beach after feeling ill just before he was to appear on a panel at Bethune-Cookman University.
Mason, one of Casey Anthony's attorneys, was there to discuss media coverage of Anthony's case.
Local 6 reporter Tony Pipitone, who was also on the panel, said Mason felt unsteady after emerging from a vehicle after a drive from Orlando to Daytona Beach.
With his wife, Shirley, and associate Lisabeth Fryer by his side, he sat in a chair in the lobby of the university's Center for Civic Engagement, sipping water and awaiting an ambulance.
Pipitone said Mason was talking and alert the entire time and never collapsed or lost consciousness.
Medical personnel checked his vitals before helping him get on a gurney for the trip to the hospital.
The university's discussion of the Anthony case, part of its daylong conference on media credibility, continued without Mason.
