When you are on an airplane, do you notice pressure in your ear? This is called airplane ear.

Airplane ear occurs when the air pressure in your middle ear and your environment are out of balance, according to the Mayo Clinic. This usually occurs at the beginning and the end of flights as the plane is ascending and descending.

While severe cases of airplane ear may need to be treated by a doctor, the Mayo Clinic says most cases can be treated by yawning, swallowing or chewing gum during a flight’s take-off and landing.
