Haren Dominant As D-Backs Top Marlins

POSTED: Saturday, July 11, 2009

(Sports Network) - The Diamondbacks' Dan Haren made a strong case for starting on the hill for the National League in next week's All-Star Game, tossing his second career shutout in an 8-0 drubbing of the Florida Marlins.

Haren (9-5), who also drove in a run, lowered his miniscule earned run average to 2.01, allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out 10. He's yielded two earned runs or fewer in each of his last nine outings.

Felipe Lopez belted a three-run homer during a five-run fourth inning, while Stephen Drew and Alex Romero each tripled in a run for Arizona, which had its five-game winning streak snapped in the series opener on Thursday.

Florida's Ricky Nolasco (6-7) had a four-start winning streak emphatically halted, as the right-hander was roped for seven runs on nine hits through six innings, striking out eight in the setback, the club's third in five games.

"They put some good swings on the ball," Nolasco said. "You just have to tip your cap to them."

Miguel Montero got the D-Backs started with a solo blast to right field in the second, and Drew added an RBI triple an inning later, scoring Lopez.

Another two-out three-bagger sparked Arizona's five-run fourth, with Romero tripling in Gerardo Parra. Chad Tracy was given an intentional walk with Haren on deck, but the ace beat out an infield single to bring in another run.

Nolasco then hung a slider to Lopez, who deposited it over the right-center field wall for a commanding 7-0 lead, the same margin the D-Backs squandered on Thursday.

But with Haren on the mound the margin was more than enough, as the right- hander allowed just one runner past second base the entire game.

Tracy's sacrifice fly in the eighth scored Parra, and Haren struck out Dan Uggla in a perfect ninth to seal a brilliant performance.

"I had good stuff, and getting a lead early is also nice. I just made pitches. I had a good cutter, the split was working for me...All in all I felt real good and obviously happy with the way I finished out," Haren said.

Game Notes

Haren's only other shutout came on September 16, 2008 against San Francisco. He threw 77 of his 117 pitches for strikes in the win. It was his third complete game of the season and ninth of his career...Ross Gload had Florida's only extra-base hit, a double in the fourth...Justin Upton went 0- for-4 and was the only Diamondbacks player not to register a hit.
