POSTED: Friday, June 29, 2007
WASHINGTON -- There were not many surprises at the top of STORES magazine's list of the nation's top 100 retailers.
Once again, Wal-Mart is in the No. 1 position with of sales of more than $348 billion last year -- an increase of almost 12 percent over 2006. In fact, Wal-Mart's revenues last year were greater than those of the next five largest U.S. retailers combined.
Home Depot and Kroger came in second and third again, respectively, with Costco jumping a notch to the No. 4 slot. Target was No. 5.
Sears Holding Corp. was once the most powerful in the United States, but that company lost ground this year. The parent of Sears Roebuck and Kmart stores fell to No. 6, losing two places to Costco Wholesale and Target Corp.
For the first time this year, restaurant companies were added to the Top 100. The highest placing was McDonald's at 16th. Others in the Top 100 were Yum! Brands, Starbucks, Darden Restaurants Brinker International and Outback Steakhouse.
