Spend Wisely On Your Daily Lunch

You Don't Have To Pack Lunch To Save Cash

Buying a lunch every day can significantly cut into your monthly budget. Americans may spend as much as $2,350 on lunches at work, according to Bankrate.com.

If, however, you are not quite ready to break out the brown bag and pack a lunch, here are some ways to save on dining out.

Plan ahead of time. Though it may be tempting, don't make last-minute lunch decisions a habit. It is always easier to go out, and it is far more tempting to spend $15 at a restaurant you love than $5 at the bargain sandwich shop down the street.

If you split packing lunches with dining out, plan which days you will be eating out ahead of time. This will save you money and a headache in the long run.

Skip the soda and dessert. When eating out, don't order a drink, appetizer or dessert. Your bill, tip and body will thank you. Most appetizers will cost at least $5, and drinks can often be as much as $3 or $4. These extras can more than double the price of a modest meal. Save big and skip them.

Split an entrée with a co-worker. When and if you can, share lunch with a co-worker. Not only are they big enough for two at most restaurants, they're usually priced that way. Sharing a lunch will benefit both you and your co-worker and keep your finances happy.

Save the extras for a packed lunch. Skipping sides, drinks and appetizers gets old quickly if you can't enjoy your favorite drink with your meal. Balance this by putting in these tasty extras when you pack a lunch. Not only will this give you more incentive to brown bag your lunch, but it will also often taste better than what you might find down the street. A piece of gourmet cheese or a bottle of your favorite drink can make or break a meal brought from home.
