For many consumers, the secret to saving big bucks online is coupon codes.
The codes are sets of numbers or letters that carry discounts on everything from electronics to designer clothes, toys and even shipping.
"It is a growing trend," online shopping expert Lauren Freedman said. "Over 38 percent of households in America have used an online coupon."
Most consumers have no idea the codes even exist, according to the Local 6 News report.
That's because many retailers give those codes only to select customers.
But now, new coupon Web sites are helping savvy shoppers cash in.
Sites like
couponmountain.com. and
copious coupons are partnering up with big name retailers to offer hundreds of coupon codes online.
"We're saving an average of 5 to 10 percent off for our customers," Coupon Mountain spokesman Talmadge O'Neill said.
How does it work?
Web surfers go to the coupon site and click on a category or specific retailer. Then click on the discount that interests you. A code will pop up and you'll be taken to the retailer's site.
Enter the coupon code when you check out and your discount is automatically applied.
Coupon deals change every day.
