Sago Palms Pose Danger To Pets

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A Problem Solvers investigation found sago palms pose a dangerous threat to pets in Central Florida.
Local 6 News reported that most people are not aware that the seeds from the center of the sago palm can be deadly to animals and even small children.
The report featured Sherra Miller, who has had Yorkie dogs for 30 years, and Mitch Rainey, who is the owner of a Daschund. Both pet owners' dogs ate the palm's seeds and became sick.
Miller's dog survived but Rainey's dog died after eating the seeds, according to the report.
"She (dog) had laid her head on my leg and we knew she was hurting at the time," Rainey said about his dog. "We knew then the prognosis wasn't good but your are not ready to give her up then."
Veterinarian Laurie Noaker said toxins in the palm seeds could destroy a dog's liver.
"We have just got to get the word out because we are just tired of watching dogs die no matter what we do," Noaker said.
Noaker warned homeowners not to bring the palms inside and keep pets away from outdoor landscaping.
Local 6 News reported that sago palms are not the only plants deadly to animals. Azaelas, oleanders and some lillies are deadly to pets.
