The Local 6 Problem Solvers teamed up with a Central Florida mom to shop the aisles of five major supermarkets to come up with the best prices.

Dina Smith, mother of two, has been on a relentless mission to find the best prices for the Local 6 survey of the area's major supermarkets.

Smith had some criteria for determining the best place to shop.

"Selection, price, consistent price and not just sale price, service," Smith said. "If they run out of things all the time, things like that."

Smith's shopping list was very specific for the Local 6 test.

With a few exceptions, Local 6 compared the very same item, same brand, same size from store to store.

Local 6 asked her to load up with the following products:

  • Luvs diapers
  • Gain detergent
  • 1 Gallon of TG Lee milk
  • 12 pack of Diet Coke
  • Tropicana Premium orange juice
  • Huggies wipes
  • Similac powder with iron
  • Delonte sliced peaches
  • 1 pound of chicken breasts
  • 1 pound of ground beef

Smith then went to different stores in Central Florida to determine the best prices.

Smith's shopping list was most expensive at Winn Dixie. Her total bill for the items on the list was $57.85.

Publix was a little cheaper at $54.11.

Super Wal-Mart landed in the middle of the list with a total bill of $53.61.

Albertson's total was $52.20 right behind Super Target where Smith paid $43.60 for the grocery list.

Super Target's total was more than $14 less than the list at Winn Dixie, Local 6 News reported.

"The only thing about target is they don't have that large a selection of different foods, but I'm hoping if they got more selection, I would probably do my primary grocery shopping there," Smith said.

"So you've heard the objective data-- the prices, the products, the bottom line comparisons," Problem Solver Steven Cooper said. "Now let's get subjective for a moment in these supermarket wars. We asked Smith about customer service and she said Publix wins in that category hands down, with Super Target a close second."
