Children Selling Books, Magazines Dupe Heathrow Residents

UPDATED: 7:02 pm EDT September 8, 2005

The Better Business Bureau is investigating several reports of children going door to door and duping homeowners in Heathrow, according to a Local 6 News report.

Officials said the children are telling homeowners that proceeds from books and magazines they are selling are going toward a school trip or team. Instead, the money is going to a business in Georgia, according to the report.

"The company calls itself United Family Circulation and they are using children to get your sympathy and money," Local 6 News reporter Vanessa Medina said.

"Some (children) may say that they're working for a particular school or working toward a vacation or prize," Better Business Bureau spokeswoman Judy Pepper said. "You see a young child at your door and they are supposedly raising money for school or trip."

Some of the children may be from out of state, claiming to attend local schools, according to the report.

"Sometimes they may be from a local school and they may be from some place out of state and they are traveling with a sales crew door to door," Pepper said.

Local 6 News was unable to reach the company's owner, James Clair.

The Better Business Bureau is warning Central Florida homeowners after complaints from more than 12 states.
