30-Year Mortgages Climb Again
Rates Take 9th Straight Increase

MCLEAN, Va. -- Fixed-rate mortgage rates were up again this week for the ninth time in as many weeks. Mortgage giant Freddie Mac reported that 30-year fixed rate mortgages rose to 6.36 percent from 6.31 percent last week. A year ago, the rate averaged 5.76 percent.A competing survey from Bankrate.com had the average 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage increasing from 6.37 percent to 6.42 percent. The rate on 15-year mortgages also went up.The average for those loans, which are popular for refinancing, stood at 5.89 percent compared with 5.85 percent a week ago.It was 5.16 percent at this time last year. Freddie Mac Chief Economist Frank Nothaft blamed fears of inflation, which were reinforced by news that wages grew faster than expected last month.
