A Problem Solvers investigation has uncovered dozens of complaints in Florida and throughout the nation about mysterious paint problems on new Mitsubishi Galant cars.
The report featured Maria Roncari, who purchased a 2002 Mitsubishi Galant that was almost new and in great condition.
However, about a year later, Roncari said she noticed the paint above the driver-side door was starting to chip.
"It keeps growing and growing like a paint cancer and starts eating away at everything," Roncari said.
The dealership where Roncari purchased the vehicle stopped returning her calls as the problem grew, the report said.
"Then I figured it was my fault," Roncari said. "I thought I didn't wax it enough or something."
Roncari thought she was alone until she went online and discovered dozens of other Mitsubishi Galant owners with the same paint problems.
"I said, 'Oh, OK, it's not me and everyone else has this and they're not getting help either,'" Roncari said. "So, immediately I called the Problem Solvers."
The Problem Solvers contacted some of the people on the
Web logs and they all owned black Mitsubishi Gallants -- with model years ranging between 1999 and 2005 -- and all of the vehicle were losing their paint.
"The same complaints are surfacing all over the country," Problem Solver Nancy Alvarez said. "Others write they've spent hundreds to repaint parts of their cars."
Local 6 News called Mitsubishi's corporate headquarters and were told they have no idea what is causing their black cars to change color.
"Roncari consulted an expert who had his own theory," Alvarez said.
"He believed it was a clear coat problem, that there was a defect in the paint," Roncari said.
The company is asking anyone with paint problems to call 888-648-7820.
