National Basketball Association Game Capsules

POSTED: Wednesday, April 2, 2008

Orlando, FL (Sports Network) - Chris Paul had 19 points and 12 rebounds, as the New Orleans Hornets edged the Orlando Magic, 98-97, at Amway Arena. Morris Peterson also contributed 19 points, while David West chipped in 18 and 11 rebounds for the Hornets, who have won seven of their last eight games overall. They are 24-12 on the road this season, and 4-1 on their current six- game trek. New Orleans is tied with San Antonio for the top spot in the Southwest Division and the Western Conference. The Spurs trounced Golden State on Tuesday. Hedo Turkoglu had 26 points and Rashard Lewis finished with 24 for the Magic, who have dropped three of four but have already clinched the Southeast Division title and are essentially locked into the Eastern Conference's No. 3 seed. Dwight Howard donated 17 points and 15 boards in the loss.

Final Score: Philadelphia 108, New Jersey 99

East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - Andre Miller scored 24 points and doled out 11 assists to lead the Philadelphia 76ers in a 108-99 victory over the New Jersey Nets at the Izod Center. Andre Iguodala added 17 points and 10 assists for the Sixers, who snapped a two-game skid and sit just a half game behind idle Toronto for the sixth spot in the Eastern Conference playoff hunt. Willie Green chipped in 16 points and Samuel Dalembert had 15 points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots. Vince Carter scored 29 points and had seven helpers for the Nets, who have dropped three in a row and rest 3 1/2 games behind Atlanta for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Devin Harris totaled 22 points in defeat, while Richard Jefferson and Bostjan Nachbar had 14 each.

Final Score: Milwaukee 119, New York 115 (OT)

Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Michael Redd poured in 36 points, dished out nine assists and reeled in six rebounds, and the Milwaukee Bucks mounted a late comeback and outlasted the New York Knicks, 119-115, in overtime. Andrew Bogut, who wore a protective mask after having recently undergone nasal surgery, scored 24 points and pulled down 13 boards for the Bucks, who snapped a four-game skid and had dropped 10 of their last 11 games entering the clash. Bobby Simmons tallied a season-high 24 points, and Milwaukee's 119-point output also marked a season-high. Quentin Richardson recorded 22 points for New York, which has fallen in eight of its last nine contests overall, and five straight and 10 of 11 on the road. Zach Randolph added 19 points and 10 rebounds despite battling the flu, and Jamal Crawford contributed 19 points and eight assists in the loss. Wilson Chandler chipped in 12 points and David Lee ended with 11 points, as the Knicks failed in their bid to sweep the season series from the Bucks. New York won the first two matchups, but had its four-game win streak against Milwaukee erased with the loss.

Final Score: Detroit 94, Minnesota 90

Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - Rodney Stuckey made the most of his late- season opportunity, scoring the go-ahead basket late in the fourth quarter to complement a 27-point effort, as the Detroit Pistons put a makeshift team on the court and beat the hapless Minnesota Timberwolves, 94-90, at the Target Center. Tayshaun Prince scored 15 points with six assists and five rebounds, but the star forward must have felt somewhat lonely playing alongside a group of reserves. Richard Hamilton, Rasheed Wallace and Chauncey Billups were deactivated prior to the contest -- a reward for the group's hard work in pushing the Pistons to another 50-win campaign. Walter Hermann added 11 points and 11 total Pistons scored, as they snapped a three- game skid. It was no April Fool's joke, even with a starting five that featured a starting backcourt of Stuckey and Jarvis Hayes. The Pistons now have eight games left in the regular season, including a pair of back-to-back games, and are basically a mathematical lock for the second seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. Al Jefferson scored 26 points with seven rebounds, Randy Foye donated 18 points with five boards and Corey Brewer posted 10 points and six rebounds for the Timberwolves, who have lost three of four.

Final Score: Boston 106, Chicago 92

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Ray Allen scored 22 points to lead the Boston Celtics in a 106-92 victory over the Chicago Bulls at the United Center. Kevin Garnett poured in 20 points and swatted four shots for the Celtics, who have won four in a row and remain six games ahead of Detroit for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. The Pistons defeated the Timberwolves on Tuesday. Paul Pierce added 17 points in victory. James Posey gave 11 points and seven rebounds, while Rajon Rondo ended with nine points and 10 assists in the win. Tyrus Thomas totaled a season-high 24 points for the Bulls, who have lost three of four and sit five games behind the Atlanta Hawks for the final spot in the Eastern Conference. Thomas was playing for Drew Gooden, who was sidelined with an abdominal strain and has missed Chicago's last two games. Andres Nocioni tallied 19 points in defeat, while Luol Deng had 10 points and Kirk Hinrich contributed nine points with five helpers for the Bulls.

Final Score: San Antonio 116, Golden State 92

San Antonio, TX (Sports Network) - Tony Parker scored 26 points, dished out seven assists and grabbed four rebounds as the San Antonio Spurs pounded the Golden State Warriors, 116-92, at the AT&T Center. Tim Duncan added 17 points and 12 boards for the Spurs, who have won eight in a row. They are 32-6 at home this season and have also won five straight as the hosts. Manu Ginobili tallied 16 points off the bench, while Michael Finley and Bruce Bowen ended with 13 and 12, respectively, in starting roles. San Antonio is tied with New Orleans for the top spot in the Southwest Division and the Western Conference. Baron Davis poured in a team-high 19 points for Golden State. The Warriors are seeded ninth, a half-game behind Denver for the final playoff berth in the West. The Nuggets outlasted the Phoenix Suns, 126-120, on Tuesday.

Final Score: Denver 126, Phoenix 120

Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Allen Iverson poured in 31 points, shooting 9- for-18 from the field and a perfect 11-for-11 at the charity stripe, and the Denver Nuggets held off a late push by the Phoenix Suns to claim the back end of the home-and-home set, 126-120, and settle into the eighth seed in the Western Conference playoff race. With Golden State's 116-92 loss at San Antonio, the Nuggets jumped the Warriors and took a half-game lead for the final playoff spot in the West. Denver also moved to just a half-game behind idle Dallas for the seventh seed. On Monday, the Suns erased a 22-point deficit in a 132-117 victory over the Nuggets at US Airways Center. It marked the third largest comeback in franchise history. On Tuesday at the Pepsi Center, Phoenix trailed by double-digits before mounting its comeback, eventually overtaking the lead before falling in the final minute. The Suns completed Tuesday's comeback in the fourth quarter, when an Amare Stoudemire foul shot sparked a 10-3 surge that was capped by a pair of Steve Nash free throws with 3:11 remaining, giving Phoenix a 113-112 edge -- its first lead of the game.

Final Score: Sacramento 99, Houston 98

Sacramento, CA (Sports Network) - Ron Artest registered 30 points and five steals, and despite his potentially game-changing turnover in the waning seconds, the Sacramento Kings held off the Houston Rockets, 99-98, at ARCO Arena. Kevin Martin finished with 27 points for the Kings, who have triumphed in three of their last four outings. Mikki Moore tallied 11 points and Brad Miller chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds, as Sacramento split the season series with Houston, two games apiece. Tracy McGrady contributed 32 points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Rockets, who remained a half- game behind Phoenix for the fifth seed in the Western Conference playoff race but slipped to 2 1/2 games behind both San Antonio and New Orleans in the Southwest Division. Luis Scola added 20 points and eight boards, and Rafer Alston provided 16 points. Dikembe Mutombo totaled 11 points, seven boards and two blocks in loss for Houston, which has dropped back-to-back contests.
