Residents in Sanford will join together on Thursday to try to "heal" the community during a special forum.

The National CARES Mentoring Movementwill host a "Night of Healing" at the Sanford Civic Center from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The goal is to help the community fix any issues and restore trust in the wake of the death of Trayvon Martin.

Police say Martin was shot and killed by George Zimmerman in February. Zimmerman told police he shot Martin in self-defense. He is currently in jail awaiting a second bond hearing.

The "Night of Healing" will feature local and national speakers. The forum will be moderated by Valencia College West President Dr. Falecia Williams. The keynote speaker at the even is Susan L. Taylor -- founder of the National CARES Mentoring Movement.

Sanford Commissioner Mark McCarty will give a presentation called "Embrace Adversity As Your Friend." Local attorneys Shahzad Ahmed and Earnest DeLoach, Jr. will give presentations on civil rights violations.
