Grenade Dropped Off In Police Station's Lobby

POSTED: 10:16 p.m. EDT October 16, 2003
UPDATED: 11:51 a.m. EDT October 17, 2003

The Mount Dora Police Department was evacuated Thursday night after an 85-year-old woman walked into the station's lobby and dropped off a grenade, according to Local 6 News.

Police said that the unidentified woman carried a toolbox through the front doors of the Mount Dora Police Department and said she wanted to get rid of it and its contents.

When an officer looked inside the box and realized that there was a grenade inside, the entire building was evacuated.

Authorities also shut down North Donnelly Street at Lincoln Avenue after the discovery.

The Lake County bomb squad was able to remove the World War II-era grenade without injuries.

During the incident, the woman apparently drove home.

Police determined who the woman was and interviewed her late Thursday night. They determined that she did not have any other explosives at home, according to Local 6 News.

There are reportedly no plans to charge the woman, according to a report.
