A slab of granite fell on top of a 63-year-old man Thursday morning, striking him in the head and injuring his arm, Brevard County Fire-Rescue officials said.
The incident happened about 8:15 a.m. at Absolute Granite and Stone on Cox Road in Cocoa, just north of State Road 520. Fire rescue officials said the granite, which weighed at least 1,000 pounds, was 1-inch thick and measured at least 6 feet by 10 feet, fell out of the truck as the worker was removing strapping from a delivery.
The victim attempted to jump out of the way, but was struck by a large piece of granite as it shattered, according to fire officials. It was at least 1-inch thick, workers told fire officials.
Paramedics were called to the site and applied a tourniquet to the man's arm to stop the bleeding, officials said.
The man was airlifted to Holmes Regional Medical Center’s trauma center in Melbourne. His condition was not immediately known, but fire officials said he was "seriously injured."
