1 arrested in South Florida police chase with U-Haul

Police say larceny suspect tried to run over officers

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Police arrested a man who they said led them on a 30 minute chase after he stole from a tool shop in Southwest Miami-Dade County, WPLG-TV reports.

The chase started when a man stole from Northern Tool + Equipment Store at 18100 S. Dixie Highway on Friday morning, according to Miami-Dade Police. Employees at the took shop recognized the man, who they say had stolen from them before, and told police to look out for a U-Haul truck.

About five blocks away, at U.S. 1 and SW 186th Street, a police officer pulled over the truck. While he was talking with the driver, identified as Darrell Conyers, 45, the truck pulled away, injuring the officer.

Police said Conyers, 45, then led police on a chase from the Palmetto Expressway and eventually making his way into Coral Gables and Miami.

The chase came to an end in the 2400 block of Southwest First Street, near Miami Senior High School. Footage taken from WPLG's Sky 10 helicopter showed officers dragging Conyers out of the vehicle and placing him in handcuffs.

A Miami-Dade Police officer was injured during the arrest. He was pinned between the U-Haul and a police car after the truck had been stopped. The officer was transported to the hospital but his condition was not immediately released.

The charges against Conyers were not immediately released.
