1 dead, 1 hurt in ATV accident in Seminole County

Witnesses say four-wheeler hit sign, flipped, threw passengers into trees

CHULUOTA, Fla. – One man is dead and another was badly hurt in an ATV accident in Seminole County.

The accident happened Friday night in the area of East First Street in Chuluota, not far from County Road 419.

Witnesses said the four-wheeler with two men in it, later identified as 22-year-old Daniel Huffman and 23-year-old Wayne Badertcher, was speeding down the road when it hit a sign, flipped and threw both passengers into the trees.

One neighbor, David Smith, had asked the two to slow down earlier in the night. About an hour later, he saw them lose control and crash into the trees at the end of the road.

Neighbors ran to try to help and also performed CPR until help arrived, but it was too late for one of the men.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene along with relatives of the victims. The second man was airlifted to the hospital.

Huffman died from his injuries and Badertcher was listed in critical condition at Orlando Regional Medical Center.

Friends of the victims told Local 6 they were best friends.

Local 6 is waiting for more official information from authorities.
