101-year-old Florida man running for Congress

Senior runs in effort to better society

SARASOTA, Fla. – After a century of living, a Florida man is hardly thinking about retirement.

Joe Newman, 101, is running for Congress because he's worried about the future of his country.

"When you think what the drift this society's going in and you think you can put an oar in the water and change the direction, you should do it," Newman said.

He is vying for the 16th Congressional District seat in Florida, which serves the Sarasota area, as a write-in candidate.

Newman says he believes the purpose of government is to better society, adding that he wants to be the voice to make voters think about real issues.
