A 44-year-old homeowner in Palm Bay, Fla., used a football helmet to strike and then capture a burglar attempting to break into his home early Monday, according to police.
Investigators said a man at a home located on the 700 block of Cayuga Avenue in the northeast part of Palm Bay heard a noise at about 3:15 a.m. and went to investigate, according to Local 6 News partner Florida Today.
The 44-year-old husband then jumped up and ran to find out what the noise was as the wife called 911, officials said. The homeowner looked out the window and spotted a man prying open a screen door with a screwdriver.
“This is a first, the victim ran out of the home with a football helmet,” said Sgt. Don Smith of the Palm Bay Police Department.
“He then struck (the suspect) in the head with the helmet and the defendant fell with the screwdriver still in his hand,” Smith said.
Palm Bay police arrived within moments and arrested Michael Elliot Brown on charges of occupied burglary attempt and possession of burglary tools.
“Apparently he was trying to get a boom box inside the home,” Smith said.
Brown was booked and transported to the Brevard County Jail Complex in Sharpes, officials said.
