COCOA, Fla. -- A Brevard County great-grandmother, angered after repeatedly seeing broadcasts of the American flag being burned by Afghanis, decided to make a statement of her own Saturday.
Mabel Sumpter, 76, of Cocoa, burned the Afghani flag in her front yard, in what she said was her form of retaliation.
"Every time I see them burning the American flag, I can hardly stand it," Sumpter said.
Sumpter worked at a Brevard County Courthouse for more than 20 years, where she raised the American flag every morning.
She said she knows what the American flag represents and when she sees it being desecrated, she becomes upset. She said she had to make a statement to the Afghani people.
