Sheriff: 84 Percent Of Robberies Committed By Kids Under 18

POSTED: Wednesday, November 29, 2006
UPDATED: 1:04 am EST December 1, 2006

A majority of robberies in Orange County, Fla., are committed by children between the ages of 13 and 18 years old, according to Sheriff Kevin Beary.

"A lot of the burglaries are happening during the day time and we're finding out that the majority are truants from school," Orange County Sheriff Kevin Beary said. "The compelling statistic is juveniles. Eighty-four percent of our county's robberies are done by kids 13 and just under 18."

Beary said the latest crime results are from a six-week crime crackdown called Operation Street Sweeper.

An interoffice memorandum obtained by Local 6 shows the crime offense developed to counter the rise in crime events delivered 1,500 arrests, including 355 juveniles. About 170 of the juveniles were truants, the report said.

As an example, Local 6 reported that 48 hours before Thanksgiving, two juveniles launched a home break-in targeting about six antique rifles and hand guns in broad daylight.

The report also followed Orange County Watch Commander Jim Stonebreaker in the field. The events he handles each night have a familiar pattern of more and more teens turning to crime and drugs, Local 6's Mike Holfeld said.

"In fact, Phase I of Street Sweepers scored 490 felony arrests and 420 narcotics violations," Holfeld said.

Beary calls the trend the "live fast, die young attitude," according to the report.

"I'll hurt whoever I want to hurt," Beary said. "I'll be the baddest guy on the block for a while knowing that I'll be either killed or put in prison."

"That's the attitude on the street?" Holfeld asked.

"That's the attitude on the street," Beary said.

Holfeld said the attitude has forced Beary to tap other departments to keep the Street Sweepers offensive going.
