MIAMI -- Police captured a carjacking suspect Monday afternoon after an hour-and-a-half pursuit on the Florida Turnpike and U.S. One in the Florida Keys.
The carjacking started in Miami where a driver was allegedly beaten with a hammer. The victim was hospitalized.
The carjacking ended in Plantation Key after the stolen SUV blew the left front tire.
The driver lost control of the vehicle after running on the rim for several miles.
When the suspect jumped out of the moving SUV, the vehicle hit and ran over his left leg.
The suspect at times drove the wrong way on the Florida Turnpike during the dangerous chase, which started in Miami.
The man eventually headed south on U.S. Highway One toward Key Largo where he passed traffic, forcing people off the two-lane road.
