COCOA, Fla. -- A Cocoa man who drove himself to a local hospital after he was shot in the head during a robbery on Sunday night is in stable condition, according to Local 6 News partner Florida Today.
The man was sitting up in bed when Cocoa police detective Barbara Matthews went to talk to him.
"I thought I was going to be looking at a homicide, but when I walked into room he was sitting up in bed," she said.
According to the police report, two men attacked the man at gunpoint in a parking lot on St. Johns Street around 8:30 p.m. Sunday. They took cash, jewelry and the victim’s car keys. After the robbery, he went to his house to get a spare set of keys so he could get his car.
When he returned to the car, the two men were still there. The victim jumped into his car to get away when he heard a gunshot and was struck in the back of his head by a bullet.
"The bullet hit his skull from behind and traveled around his skull," Matthews said.
She didn’t know if the man has been released from the hospital yet.
Police said they were looking for Adidas Fila Rowson and an unnamed suspect in the shooting. Matthews said Rowson pulled the trigger. An officer spotted Rowson on Sunday, but he took off on foot, she said. She said police were confident they will soon make an arrest.
"If not we’ll turn it over to the state attorney and get a warrant," Matthews said.
