Police: 'Golf Ball' Story Used In Attempted Sex Assault Of Woman

Authorities Issue Warning To Homeowners

POSTED: Thursday, December 14, 2006
UPDATED: 9:25 am EST December 14, 2006

Authorities in Orange County are warning residents that a man may be targeting women living on or near golf courses, after he used a story about golf ball damage to enter a home and attack a woman, according to Local 6 News.

Investigators released a composite sketch of a man who somehow entered the gated Stoneybrook West Country Club in Winter Garden and knocked on a woman's door on Wednesday.

Investigators said the man wanted to check the lights on a woman's porch to see if he had broken one with a golf ball.

When the woman opened the door to talk with the man, he forced his way inside and attempted to sexually assault her, police said.

The woman was able to fight him off and the man was last seen fleeing on foot in the area, according to the report.

"I'm just appalled at it and surprised that that sort of crime would take place in here because we really feel this is a relatively safe community," resident John Vaughn said.

"Keep all of your doors and windows locked," Winter Garden police Sgt. Bobby Butler said. "Don't open the door unless you know who is there. Look through your peep hole or look through your side window. If you don't know who is there -- it doesn't matter if it is daytime or nighttime, if you unsure of who is at your door, then don't open it."

The culprit is described as a white male who is about 30 years old with brown hair, a thick goatee. He was wearing brown pants and a brown golf jacked with a baseball cap showing a navy blue logo.

Anyone with information about the crime is urged to call Crimeline at (800) 423-TIPS.
